The Nutcracker in Concert
The Sala Grande of Florence's Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino hosts a performance of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, Op. 71 in a concert format conducted by the renowned Italian maestro Gianandrea Noseda. Primarily known as a ballet, the music was composed by Tchaikovsky to be presented with dancers. This orchestral concert features the music taken from one of the most popular ballets of all time, The Nutcracker, without ballet performers. Set at Christmastime, Tchaikovsky loosely based the music on a children's fairy tale by E. T. A. Hoffmann, adapted by Alexandre Dumas.
Tchaikovsky began orchestrating The Nutcracker after the success of The Sleeping Beauty led to a new commission. During the writing process, he extracted a suite of eight numbers, first performed before the ballet itself on 19 March 1892 at the Saint Petersburg branch of the Russian Musical Society. The Nutcracker, as a full ballet, would go on to be premiered on 18 December 1892 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg.
Unlike the aforementioned Nutcracker Suite, this performance includes all of the ballet music Tchaikovsky composed for the ballet work, such as the Valse des fleurs, or Waltz of the Flowers, and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, one of Tchaikovsky's most celebrated compositions. This two-hour concert offers a deeper musical experience than the suite itself, allowing the audience to fully appreciate the richness of Tchaikovsky’s score. Listeners will notice that the orchestration includes a glockenspiel and a celesta, alongside the usual strings and wind instruments used in compositions of the late 19th century, instrumentation that gives the music a distinctive sound that many associate with the festive season.
Gianandrea Noseda has worked with prestigious orchestras and opera houses all over the world. In the United States, his career includes posts such as the Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra. Noseda is also widely known for his work as the Zurich Opera House's General Music Director. This performance of The Nutcracker in concert features the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino along with the children's choir of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Academy, an occasion that will live long in the memory thanks to such a skilled conductor and spellbinding music.
