Swan Lake, Ballet by P. I. Tchaikovsky
Few ballet stories are as enduring as that of Swan Lake, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet. This season, it continues to captivate audiences at Florence’s Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. The city's foremost venue for ballets, operas and concerts constitutes a superb setting to experience the full musical majesty of this late nineteenth-century masterpiece with its soaring melodies and richly expressive orchestration.
Despite the ballet's long-established popularity, Swan Lake was not a great success following its debut performance, which took place at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia, on 4 March 1877. Critics were rather harsh about it, tending to focus their attention on the somewhat uninspiring original choreography by Julius Reisinger. Indeed, such was the reaction that Tchaikovsky considered turning away from writing music for ballets permanently. As it turned out, he would go on to produce two more ballet scores, however, The Sleeping Beauty in 1890 and, following its success, The Nutcracker in 1892.
Tchaikovsky began working on Swan Lake in 1875. The libretto for the fairytale ballet was drawn from both Russian and German folklore. The influence of highly respected ballet composers of the time, such as Léo Delibes and Adolphe Adam, can be detected in Swan Lake's music, packed as it is with memorably expressive and emotive melodies and leitmotifs. Inspired by their work, the great Russian composer completed the score for Swan Lake within a year.
The storyline in Swan Lake focuses on Odette, a princess who is suffering under a curse cast on her by the evil sorcerer Rothbart which forces her to live as a swan. Meanwhile, Prince Siegfried is told by the Queen, his mother, that the time has come when he must find a suitable bride. The prince's friend, Benno, notices Siegfried has been upset by the Queen's demands and suggests going on a hunt as a diversion. While separated from the rest of the hunt group, the Prince takes aim at a flock of swans. From his vantage point on the lakeside, however, he sees that one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman, the aforementioned Odette. Later in the ballet, Rothbart attends the royal palace where young princesses are to be presented to Siegfried. The sorcerer hopes to leverage his position, knowing the Prince has fallen in love with Odette but will his plans succeed?
