Disney Fantasia Live in Concert

Disney Fantasia Live in Concert is a rendition of the famous animated movie, first released in 1940, with music performed live as the action unfolds on screen. This version of Fantasia - which features renowned pieces such as Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite and Ludwig van Beethoven’s 'Pastoral' Symphony, among others - takes place at the world-famous Roman Baths of Caracalla with music supplied by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma orchestra. This particular event will, in effect, constitute something of a double bill because the screening will open with the Orchestra dell’Opera of Rome performing the soundtrack to Fantasia along with sections of its sequel, Fantasia 2000.
Many of the scenes in both movies broke new ground when they were first released, not only in terms of the advanced animation techniques being used but because of their innovative interpretations of music. Among the best-known sequences set to classical music is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by the French composer Paul Dukas, published in 1897 as a symphonic poem. In other animated sequences, the suite from Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird and Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy also feature. Consequently, this is an event that music lovers will enjoy regardless of whether they happen to also be interested in cinema and the wider entertainment world of Walt Disney.
The Terme di Caracalla, once the second-largest set of working public baths in the Roman world, were built sometime between 211 and 217 although the exact dates they were constructed remain in doubt. They are one of the main attractions dating back to antiquity in the Eternal City and are the host site each summer for a number of cultural events. Disney Fantasia Live in Concert is a performance that fuses live music with the silver screen and its setting, in the old Roman baths, means that this particular event will be like no other. Both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 have been restored to their original quality with high-definition projections. Although both films differ somewhat from the usual Disney canon, they offer all of the storytelling and visual treats that the studio is known for.
Considered to be Walt Disney's masterpiece when it was first released, Fantasia is still much-loved to this day. Given audience goers will be able to view it with a top-quality orchestra performing the music live in such an auspicious setting, this event will both entertain and enchant in equal measure.
